Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned her family and she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of at the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after one week decided she wasn't a good fit. Ford later applied for a spot for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime she already had made her TV debut on the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Alongside her usual theatre work, Tate joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up humor, which she began adding to her repertoire in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
